The reference photo was taken during my visit to the Missouri Botanical Gardens last fall.  I liked the contrast of the silky flowers with the thorns and the light and shadows.

I've been taking a drawing class the last few months as I thought it would help advance my painting skills, specifically so I could draw rather than trace onto the canvas what I want to paint.  This still life was set up so we could practice all of the skills we learned during the class.
